On traditional, non-foldable smartphones, most people prefer to keep automatic screen rotation turned off. That's because when you want the screen to stay in portrait orientation, the way you're holding the phone can cause it to switch to landscape. Those accidental rotations can quickly become frustrating.
Foldable phones, however, are a different story. When using the book-style inner display on devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 8, people often rotate the phone frequently to better match the content they're viewing. In that situation, keeping automatic screen rotation enabled makes much more sense.
The cover display, however, is typically used like a regular smartphone. That means leaving automatic screen rotation enabled for the sake of the inner display can result in the same accidental rotations on the cover screen that users generally prefer to avoid. Samsung has solved this issue with One UI 9.0 (Android 17) on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.
On the brand's latest book-style foldable phones, the software remembers your screen rotation preference separately for the cover and inner displays (via Reddit). This lets you keep auto-rotation disabled on the cover screen while leaving it enabled on the inner display, with the phone automatically switching between the two settings as you move from one screen to the other.
Hopefully, the brand will extend this feature to older phones with book-style foldable displays, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 7, with the One UI 9.0 update.
